Kernel 2.6.38.2 + -NRJ and -NRJ-PAE for 2010.1, 2010.2

Post by NicCo »

Kernel 2.6.38.2 NRJ and -NRJ-PAE for Mandriva Linux 2010.1 2010.2
Changelog: 2.6.38.2 > http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... g-2.6.38.2

Kernel 2.6.38.2 folders: All kernels are inside separate folders (when ready...)
Mandriva 2010.2 - 32bit -> http://pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.2/32/p ... s/2.6.38.2
Mandriva 2010.2 - 64bit -> http://pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.2/64/p ... s/2.6.38.2

Available in 4 different flavours:
  • kernel-nrj-desktop > for 64bit and 32bit multimedia desktop, 32bit is limited using not more than 3 Gb ram,
  • kernel-nrj-pae-desktop > exclusively for 32bit (NOT 64!), when you have more than 3 Gb ram (upto 64Gb),
  • kernel-desktop,
  • kernel-server.
Please, avoid to install and use kernel-desktop, use instead NRJ or NRJ-PAE!
kernel-desktop config, we found it's very unresponsive for desktop and multimedia apps:
so we accept feedbacks only for -NRJ and -NRJ-PAE, and eventually -server (for server)

I remember you that:
  • recent versions of vmware7.1.3/vmplayer3.1.3 need some patch to build & work properly
  • recent proprietary drivers (ati 8.821) or some wi-fi could have problems with kernel 2.6.38

Kernel 2.6.38.1, Energy & PAE for mdv 2010.1, 2010.2

Image
Image Let's give a surge of pure energy to our brand new Mandriva Linux!

Image LEGENDA:
kernel-nrj-desktop (as for energy) : for low latency and multimedia desktop (better for remote desktop control, and DAW apps like Ardour, Jammin, Jackit, Hydrogen, ecc...)
kernel-nrj-pae-desktop (as for energy plus PAE): for 32bit, the same as energy plus support ram up to 64Gb
kernel-desktop for desktop standard (Not suggested: slow and unresponsive for desktop and multimedia use!)
kernel-server only for server applications like LAMP, slow and not suggested in Desktop PC

KERNEL ENERGY MIB
makes your PC much more responsive even under stress, when you have so many programs running, and when you have the CPU close to 100% usage, if you use many VM, multimedia programs, and even if you use remote desktop apps

ENERGY > NRJ so name become > kernel-nrj-desktop-2.6.3X.X

Main features will be:
* full manbo patchset
* full preempt, low latency, less debug;

You may have installed concurrently kernel 2.6.31.x and/or 2.6.33.x standard and the "nrj" or "nrj-pae" one

Image LEGENDA:

* full manbo patchset
* full preempt, low latency, less debug;

Kernel 2.6.38.2 NRJ has Mike Gilbraith's new scheduler_autogroup enabled by default
Requested by a lot of users: It brings a huge speed boost to the desktops cutting desktop latency by a factor of ten!
Read here for more info: http://mib.pianetalinux.org/mib/forum/v ... =20&t=2451

So, if you want test its effects and side-effects, you can enable/disable the CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP=y

On the fly, from a root konsole, typing

To disable Autogroup

Code: Select all

echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
To enable Autogroup again

Code: Select all

echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
at boot, from Grub, adding to your kernel line the string, you disable Autogroup

Code: Select all

noautogroup

Update: 30 mar 2010
With recent vmplayer 3.1.4 and workstation 7.1.4, this guide is obsolete:
these latest versions are natively compatible with recent kernels 2.6.38.x

Image - Image Vmware 7.1.3 / Vmplayer 3.1.3 How To: Patches and Guide

There is not official vmware software version or patch to build & work against kernel 2.6.38.xx

I found in the web, two different solutions coming from community users:
Solution 1 > Patch prepared for previous kernel 2.6.37 that unmodified seems working also for kernel 2.6.38
Solution 2 > Patch for 2.6.38, replacing deprecated lock_kernel/unlock_kernel functions with private mutexes.

I tried and tested successfully 2>, so I suggest that and go to explain

Solution 2>

Image Download (click right button) and Save these two files in your Home user folder
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/ ... _2.6.38.sh
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/ ... eric.patch

- Open a root konsole/terminal

Code: Select all

cd /path/where-you-saved-the-two-files
sh ./vmware/patch-modules_2.6.38.sh
Obviously the first line, replace the text with the location to which you saved the two files

http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/ ... _2.6.38.sh
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/ ... eric.patch

Code: Select all

cd /percorso/dove-avete-salvato-i-due-files
sh ./vmware/patch-modules_2.6.38.sh

Solution 1> not tried by me...
Download the patch file and the patcher
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/ ... _2.6.37.sh
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/ ... eric.patch

Mebiusstrip wrote:[If you can build the old 2.6.37 patch on 2.6.38-1 then your kernel has BKL enabled.
The new patch just replaces BKL usage with private muxes.
Big Kernel Lock is an old and deprecated feature which was scheduled for removal in 2.6.38.
Debian and others ship kernels with BKL disabled by default but it seems that Ubuntu is trying to keep this feature for retrocompatibility purpose.

In any event, I'm using the BKL-less patch with this kernel.

Installato Kernel 2.6.38.2 tutto Ok
Funziona perfettamente.

I did that on 64-bit 2010.2, running that kernel, now, with nividia, but the vboxhost module doesn't build. I am using VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.10_66523_mdv2010.0-1 from Oracle: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads with a cross-pollination of the MIB dkms-vboxadditions package, background for this installation is here: http://bjoernvold.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... f7a7#p5312 I am not recollecting all the details of this older installation.

Tutto OK per Mandriva 2010.2 - 64bit - Kernel 2.6.38.2 NRJ.

Per Vmplayer 3.1.4 tutto OK.

Grazie

In my situation, I decided to try installing the newer http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... x86_64.rpm

Of interest, I think, is that urpmi would not upgrade, there were many file conflicts, so removing VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.10_66523_mdv2010.0-1 and installing the new rpm was my next try, which worked. Also, I discovered a need to install the new extensions for usb and other conveniences.

I've only got an occasional need for XP emulation to use GoToMeeting for a business related function, so my usage is unsophisticated. Initially, everything seems fine with VirtualBox and the 2.6.38.2-desktop-nrj.69mib kernel. Also interesting:

Code: Select all

[rolf@localhost ~]$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
1
is automatically done, as I thought I read manual configuration was needed. Mais, tant mieux!
Thanks.

Image Mandriva 2010.2 x86_64 Installed on all right, but I have noted an improvement in performance.

(WW) Falling back to old probe method for v4l
(WW) RADEON(0): LVDS Info:
(WW) RADEON(0): DRI init changed memory map, adjusting ...
(WW) RADEON(0): MC_FB_LOCATION was: 0x00cf00c0 is: 0x00cf00c0
(WW) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION was: 0x003f0000 is: 0x00030000
