Rosa Desktop Fresh R1 and Nvidia

Post by akiro »

Hi all,
as I spoke in a previous thread I have a problem with nvidia driver after the big update to:

Code: Select all

ROSA Desktop Fresh R1 release 2012.1 for x86_64
Here a fast recap:
After update to Fresh R1 and reboot of system It didn't show the kde desktop so I opened another terminal and I launched "XFdrake" from root and I choosen proprietary driver, after installation I had:

Code: Select all

    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 8 series and later (nouveau/nvidia-current)"
    Driver "nvidia"
for my Nvidia GTX 460, and on next restart I could logon into KDE desktop as usual.

But now I find the new release less reactive: the refresh, and resize of the windows are quite slow, probably a compatibility problem with proprietary driver for Nvidia.
And every time that I changed through "/usr/bin/nvidia-settings" the "Image Settings" (OpenGL Settings) to a different quality display I receive:

Code: Select all

Jun 2 14:17:36 picci kernel: [ 4904.558340] traps: nvidia-settings[23408] trap invalid opcode ip:7f3cc5162a17 sp:7fff53c38718 error:0 in libpixbufloader-xpm.so[7f3cc515e000+6000]
Jun 2 14:17:36 picci [23430]: Process 23408 (nvidia-settings) dumped core.
What I can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks

From this post viewtopic.php?f=53&t=3955
try this:
# systemctl enable kdm.service
from a root console: It's works ;-)

Sorry, I badly explained, KDM still works. It's already enabled and I can use the desktop as usual, the problem is that the new release is very less reactive: the refresh and resize of the windows are very slow, probably a compatibility problem with proprietary driver for Nvidia.

It might happen that your nvidia driver install went bad, like was for the kernel, in these cases, you can also remove the installed drivers, then install again, i mean the same driver version available for ROSA Fresh R1, and I hope you can solve in this way

Otherwise, if for your video card you found a bad regression with using new nvidia driver 319.17, you can try different drivers, for example newer 319.23, or previous drivers different than 319.xx (series 304, 310, 313)

and luckly for you, MIB has a good number of different nvidia-current series in its mesa-xorg repositories:
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/rosa201 ... mesa-xorg/
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/rosa201 ... mesa-xorg/

I remind you, that does not need to install the entire X14/Mesa9.1 project, if now you dont want go to X14/Mesa91,
but you can add the repo only to add the nvidia or the drivers to try, install them, then remove those testing repos,

the drivers, but carefull only the proprietary ati & nvidia, are compatible with official X13 present in ROSA Fresh R1

(*) BTW, the entire project to replace old graphic stack (Xorg 13) with the newest Xorg server 1.14 and Mesa 9.1, has been widely tested by us in a lot of different hardware, and its status could be defined, stable enough..., so I have installed that on all my PCs and on all PCs of my friends

Hi all,
I also have problems with nvidia driver (FX series). The computer is very slow and i have problem to see videos with vlc.

A final problem concerns the start of kdm, I have already tried with the command: systemctl enable kdm.service, but I have to run startx.

Now i'll try with NicCo advice :-)

POSTEDIT: right now, I've suggested to ROSA the updating of nvidia173 for R1, to the most recent version 173.14.37

More Info about nvidia173.14.37

If you have Nvidia FX, perhaps now you are using slow nuveau drivers, because nvidia173.14.36 are not good for kernel > 3.6
During install or kernel 3.8 or nvidia 173.14.36 can be stay togheter, so i can presume the nvidia173 driver has been removed

Check if you are using Nvidia proprietary or Xorg Nuveau, I bet you are now using only 'nuveau'!
Simulating an install of nvidia173 drivers, it proposes me deleting immediately all kernels > 3.6

Code: Select all

SOLUTION?
As usual, MIB comes to the rescue:
We have nvidia 17.3.14.37 compatible with Kernel 3.8 and X14 too

I can suggest the same thing I've wrote before to Akiro, just above
viewtopic.php?p=22170#p22170

so you can add the MIB xorg-mesa repository to get proper driver

That's the example, if your distro is 32bit

Code: Select all

urpmi.addmedia X14_32bit http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/rosa2012.1/32/testing/mesa-xorg/
then try something like

Code: Select all

urpmi dkms-nvidia173.14.37
then use XFdrake to choose proprietary drivers (sometimes this operation is safer outside the kde, in init3)

Code: Select all

XFdrake
At this point, you can also continue to update everything to the complete X 1.14.1 / Mesa 9.1.3

Otherwise, if you dont want the update to the complete X14/Mesa 9.1, you can remove the repo

Code: Select all

urpmi.removemedia X14_32bit

Thanks NicCo,

I already solved, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers dkms-nvidia173 from the official repos, now it works fine.

But it may also be helpful tonight I can try with new drivers mib.

Bye, Stefano.

So, you have working > nvidia173.14.36 with the kernel 3.8.12-2?

Re: Rosa Desktop Fresh R1 and Nvidia

SO, the requirements for nwew nvidia packages needs X14:
if you don't want, stop the update and remove the repository

BTW:
I have installed X14 in all my PCs, and I have had none problems,
after the windows open / move faster

I already solved, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers dkms-nvidia173 from the official repos, now it works fine.
So, you have working > nvidia173.14.36 with the kernel 3.8.12-2?
hi Nicco,
I do not know why when i reboot, Rosa was started with the 3.6.10 kernel-nrj-desktop, with this kernel everything works fine, just i have a moment I'll try with 3.8.12.
But with kernel 3.8.12 I had problem at shutdown pc ..

Updated all but I still have the problem.
Resize of a window or change focus are quite slow (resize them I can see the redraw in steps).

Code: Select all

# rpm -qa|grep -i nvid
lib64kwinnvidiahack4-4.10.3-11-rosa2012.1.x86_64

nvidia-current-doc-html-319.23-69.1-mib2012.1.x86_64
Driver used, from Harddrake:

Code: Select all

Modulo: ‎Card:NVIDIA GeForce 8 series and later (nouveau/nvidia-current)
A good news is that I don't have anymore:

Code: Select all

traps: nvidia-settings[23408] trap invalid opcode ip:7f3cc5162a17 sp:7fff53c38718 error:0 in libpixbufloader-xpm.so[7f3cc515e000+6000]

KDE Control Center or systemsettings is your friend...

You may check is you are using XRender or OpenGL for Windows Composing > Choose OpenGL
DeskTop Effects > Advanced > Composition > choose "OpenGL" > Apply

If you have an old Nvidia FX (nvidia 5100 to 5900), you surely have NOT a fast video card, so you need a proper tuneup!

New KDE 4.10 Kwin has enabled by default some very nice but in certain cases even too heavy effects, especially when enabled for some old/slow cards like the your, those effects can show, if not well supported by the hardware, a very bad or slow behaviour...

You may check from KDE effects, it you have, and surely you have, some heavy effects enabled:
DeskTop Effects > All effects > from the long list of effects, for examples, two are windows related
- maximize animation > Disable it!
- minimize animation > Disable it!
(these uses animation to maximize or minimize windows, if video card is slow you see a bad redraws)

You can try disable all other effects, enabling only one at a time, so experimenting properly which effects are good for you and your video card, these you can leave, while you must disable all effects that make behaves bad your kde...

If you have an Nvidia FX and you use proprietary Nvidia drivers, surely you use nvidia173,
so nvidia-current are not necessary, it can lead to confusion, I suggest you to remove them!

Hi,
already checked all the request.
"OpenGL" is already setted. "System graphics Qt" is setted on "Native" but I never changed it.
And also I haven't enabled the "DeskTop Effects".

My graphics card is quite new (GTX 460) not so old like the others mentioned...

And I removed all the nvidia driver that I don't need it.

Code: Select all

# rpm -qa|grep -i nvid
dkms-nvidia-current-319.23-69.1-mib2012.1.x86_64

Hi,
probably I have resolved.
Last times was very awful the system so I yet search on web... and I found this paragraph:
Which graphics system is used depends on the distribution defaults. For the Compositor raster is recommended especially if the NVIDIA driver is used. KWin will always select the best graphics system for your chosen compositor. The following general combinations can be recommended:

OpenGL with raster
...
on userbase.kde.org

I have also chosen under "configure system graphics" for my NVIDIA board:
- Enable Translucency (extension Composite)
- Enable acceleration RENDER

a reboot and now system is very very reactive.
