Rosa 2012 Marathon - Testing, Whishlist, ToDo and Suggestions...
This is a place where we can discuss about the new distro called Rosa 2012 Marathon:
based on Mandriva 2011, with many updates and fixes both in core parts and user apps
MIB has some testers that are trying the test isos, and report all problems to be fixed.
People different than testers may even collaborate here, writing their own whishlist...
Repository configuration
To configure all the software fonts for
Rosa 2012lts, you can use these small scripts:

Feedback from our testers, about latest #178 and #193 ISOs
It has been reported that almost everything already seems to work fine
PROS
- install times are incredible fast, the really lowest times in every distro:
install time range from a little more of two minutes upto eight minutes,
and no more needing to delete unused languages after the install...

(Results from my real (not vm) hard-disk Install on a Phenon X4 with 4 Giga ram)
- nvidia 9500 is configured using by default nvidia drivers 295.33,
it's good to know we have all proprietary video drivers in our isos!
(nvidia-96xx, nvidia173, nvidia-current, fglrx catalyst, others...)
- new KLook is a wonderfull new feature:
it's really very useful, powerful and easy to use
- i found installed by default kernel-devel, kernel-headers, firmwares,
good choice having also "make" & "gcc" as preinstalled, it's very good
- Kudos for kernel, it's really good for me:
for the first time vmware tools build everything happily and without any errors

Creating a new initrd boot image for the kernel.
Starting vmware-tools (via systemctl): [ OK ]
The configuration of VMware Tools 8.8.2 build-590212 for Linux for this running
kernel completed successfully.
You must restart your X session before any mouse or graphics changes take
effect.
You can now run VMware Tools by invoking "/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox-cmd" from the
command line or by invoking "/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox" from the command line
during an X server session.
To enable advanced X features (e.g., guest resolution fit, drag and drop, and
file and text copy/paste), you will need to do one (or more) of the following:
1. Manually start /usr/bin/vmware-user
2. Log out and log back into your desktop session; and,
3. Restart your X session.

Things to fix
- The msg to deactivate Akonadi is only in cyrillic:
please this must be multilanguage, or in english
- In live mode it's still too sloooow to start
- The installer hangs and go back to the partitioning tools if you choose
btrfs for / and home,
if you select btrfs for root and ext4 for /home, it says error mounting /home,
nothing to do with btrfs, so I abandoned the idea, I used ext4 and all is fine
- Simple Welcome shows the default folders ever in English:
I have them in my lang in dolphin, but I can see only in english
Documents, Immages, Models, Music, Download, Videos
in my case (in italian) I should see
Documenti, Immagini, Modelli, Musica, Scaricati, Video
- new KLook beta has some audio problem:
playing videos, it often plays some videos without the audio part
- broadcom related packages are missing from the iso,
so broadcom wifi cards won't be usable.
- Pulse has problems, it can't be used with 2 audio cards
so it could be useful adding to the iso also the utility
alsaconfig
for users needing to bypass Pulse, using Alsa instead
Is would be possible having a newer Pulseaudio version?

- When installing, if Advanced, it asks you if you want to enable xguest user:
if you answer 'Yes', it informs you that the package xguest does not exists
Suggestions:
- Support again the raid install mode (mdx):
in mandriva 2011 this feature has been lost
- I don't like debug/not debug packages in the same repos.
lists are bigger, searches are more difficult
- Add some more very usefull programs
- Kaffeine + dvb-apps > for TV card & usb >
- Minitube and/or Gmediafinder >for Youtube videos
- Quadkonsole > for better konsole > http://nomis80.org/
- Choqok - defined best microblogging app
- FileZilla - it's the best ftp client app
- Qbittorrent - the best torrent app
- Calibre - for ebook reading
- Inkscape - best SVG editor, similar to Adobe Illustrator
- Scribus - best WYSIWYG editor similar to Quark XPress
- Gimp - preferable the 2.8 rc branch, the best image editor
- Blender - 3D editor
- K3B - it seems missing???
- Audacity - best audio editor
- Qt-recordmydesktop - to record desktop sessions
- Avidemux - video editor
- Kdeenlive - non linear video editor
- Timidity++ and Kmid - for midi plater and karaoke
- XBMC 11 - best media center
- Wine32 - it need for many win32 apps
and with some script to install from the web
- TeamViewer - the most used to remote desktop control
- Skype - It's a must, we must have it
- Google Earth
- Google Picasa
- Vmware Player
- provide a working rescue mode in the first menu
- in the kde prefs menu there are clementine and kontact, but they are not installed.
- Gnome look without composite manager enabled is really ugly,
moving windows across the video is slow and not fluid at all
Enable compmgr > we have better moving windows and 3D look with depth & shadows
to enable and test, there is a command
gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool true
to disable, the same with false
gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool false
My experience says that 99% of HW is capable to use Composite:
I would like to have this feature by default, or button to enable/disable
From command> gconf-editor , go to
Apps-> metacity-> general >
set flag on the checkbox called compositing_manager
windows will be generated with composite and shadows
To disable deflag the same checkbox
Questions:
- Too many packages aren't in the repository. can we add ufficial Mandriva repos?
or we have to tell you the packages that we think you have to add?
- Will be possible to roll mandriva 2011 to rosa 2012 without the need to reinstall:
do you think to add some command, like task_rosa2012, to make this operation as easy possible

Install time is really impressive
The look is amazing, not my favorite, but very nice.
but
- in live mode it's still too sloooow to start
- i don't like debug/not debug packages in the same repos. lists are bigger, searches are more difficult
- in the kde prefs menu there are clementine and kontact, but they are not installed

Please, provide a working

Audio failed on SB Audigy And SND Intel sound card, pulse libs on 64 bit never worked on my machines,
and the broadcom related packages are missing from the iso, so broadcom wifi cards won't be usable.

Use 2011.0 repos then add also repos from
ftp://ftp.yandex.ru/rosa/rosa2012lts/repository/
I'll prepare strings to add repos, very soon...

The look is amazing, not my favorite, but very nice.
but
- in live mode it's still too sloooow to start
- i don't like debug/not debug packages in the same repos. lists are bigger, searches are more difficult
- in the kde prefs menu there are clementine and kontact, but they are not installed
- too many packages aren't in the repository. can we add ufficial Mandriva repos? or we have to tell you the packages that we think you have to add?
- some ugly icons in SimpleWelcome(pavucontrol is terrible
)
Please, provide a working
rescue mode in the first menu
Ciao, Luca.
I've dumped the iso on usb stick with unetbootin, and in live mode it's fastest mandriva ( ?? ) ever....
i don't know from dvd how it works but from usb it's 23 seconds from 0 to kde desktop ( passing thru language set and time zone..)

You must wait some days, because the rosa2012lts repositories are uncomplete
It should be prepared some command (task_rosa2012lts) to update from 2011 to rosa2012, but it must be tested
we will inform about when it will be possible do this operation in a safely way...
