Kernel 3.6.2 QL (Quantum Leap) for ROSA MARATHON 2012, ROSA Desktop 2012 (2012.1) and Mandriva 2010, MDV2011.0

General INFO about the new project - Read carefully!
Kernel nrjX(treme?), the Next Generation... a step forward

nrjQL suffix is the new temporary codename > http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_leap
Metaforicamente, quantum leap indica anche un salto di qualità o un radicale mutamento di paradigma nella scienza, nella tecnologia o in altri contesti.

English:
Metaphorically, quantum leap also indicates a "quantum leap" or better like a radical paradigm shift in science, technology, or in other contexts.

While the mainline kernel serie is
Kernel 3.6.2 for ROSA 2012.0 / 2012.1 & Mandriva 2010 2011
Image Image
Development status of experimental tree:
While we could consider the fist public version of Kernel 3.5.3-69 only as an Alfa version
We can consider this new version 3.6.2-69 as a RC1 version (with all features enabled)

On all new flavours have been developed points named 1 to 6 (CK1/BFS/BFQ/TOI/UKSM)
now added also AUFS3 and the feature to boot even from UEFI FAT devices
actually inserted / enabled the TuxOnIce feature active only in -laptop -netbook flavours

ImageImageImage

Temporary flavour names list - nrjQL is the temporary codename for this RC version

  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
  • kernel-nrjQL-realtime > like mainline kernel-nrj-realtime plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
It's the one optimized for all realtime and pro audio apps (DAW) > examples: Jackd, Ardour, Rosegarden, ecc...
  • kernel-nrjQL-laptop > like mainline kernel-nrj-laptop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
with laptop configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting
  • kernel-nrjQL-netbook > like mainline kernel-nrj-netbook plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
with netbook configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting
  • kernel-nrjQL-server > like mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
to be used in a generic server environment (like LAMP) and other server apps
  • kernel-nrjQL-server-games > like mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
to be used in a game server PC for 3D FPS games, for example CounterStrike
  • kernel-nrjQL-server-computing > like mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
to be used in a cumputational server when you need some less times to file encoder, converter, and build programs
Then we have all PAE flavours, and for now only one CPU oriented (new Intel) + PAE
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-pae
  • kernel-nrjQL-realtime-pae
  • kernel-nrjQL-laptop-pae
  • kernel-nrjQL-netbook-pae
these have been optimized for all Intel cpus greater than Pentium4 (starting from Centrino upto I3/I5/I7)
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-core2
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-core2-pae

ImageIMPORTANT, READ!
  • New path of the Kernel folders for Mandriva and ROSA
General INFO about the new kernel paths and also about the new proprietary kernel drivers
  • Before downloading and installing any kernel 3.6.2 flavour, you need to install the Required microcode firmware!
Microcode firmwares for cpu AMD / INTEL updates
With the proper cpu microcode enabled you can obtain a more reliability of you system, especially indespensable in server area, so when your cpu has a defect, kernel will found the best work-around to avoid slowdowns, or dangerous oops that could harm till to freeze your OS...
  • Notice for the users of MDV 2011!
Some problems could still occour in Mandriva 2011 by dracut remaining problems with installation and update
these problems if / when happen are not our fault, because aren't related to the kernel contents or packaging...
Once I succeeded to solve this ugly problem, installing the "dracut" version from RM2012 repositories into 2011

On my 2010.2 x64, as previously reported for 3.5.6 kernel, I noted that
- grub doesn't show in the list 3.6.2-nrj-desktop kernel; the default kernel is 3.5.6 (not listed), so I can't test it
- kernel-nrj-desktop 3.6.2 doesn't compile the nvidia 302.XX driver (I saw that during installation process)

I believe your grub list has some problems, there are not problems in create grub points for new kernels
About 3.5.6 we can consider it as already old, In some hours we'll have new kernel 3.5.7 32bit for 2010
About nvidia, new drivers should work properly, at least it was reported by friends that new drivers work fine.

BTW - we are disccussing in the wrong wrong, because this is about nrjQL flavours, not the mainline kernels...

It was reported about desktop and netbook flavours, install, boot and work properly
especially new kernel-nrjQL-desktop results incredible fast and rapid on every aspects
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
  • kernel-nrjQL-netbook > like mainline kernel-nrj-netbook plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
with netbook configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting

It seems that there are problems with other flavours, signaled error is "hangs on boot"
"Booting initial ramdisk..." then nothing

I refer about 3.6.2QL kernel
About grub:
also with the mainline 3.5.6 kernel grub didn't show the proper list. Uninstalling previously installed kernel (3.5.6), 3.6.2 kernel starts only under default item. I manually updated the list (not happy about it)
About nvidia driver:
the 302.11 mib driver doesn't compile with 3.6.2. I downloaded 304.10 from nvidia (.run file). If I install that may I have some problem (i.e. if doesn't work properly, how can uninstall it?)? To me, building the driver is too difficult
