Kernel 3.5.4 (Evolution) for Mandriva 2010.2 2011.0 and ROSA 2012.0 2012.1

General INFO about the new project
Kernel nrjX(treme?), the Next Generation... a step forward

While the mainline kernel serie is
Kernel 3.5.4 for Mandriva 2010 2011.0 & ROSA 2012 2012.1
Image Image
Development status:
While we could consider the fist public version of Kernel 3.5.3-69 only as an Alfa version
We can consider this new version 3.5.4-69 0/1 as a Beta version (all features enabled)
The following version, kernel 3.5.5, I hope having final config profiles and flavour names

+++ We need to test the behaviour of Tickless mode ON / OFF +++

Considerations:

The suggestions by Kernel developers (Linux and Co.) are to use everywhere the Tickless Mode
With Tickless we are more ecologist, the OS should be more gentle with the cpu, but less reactive

The Con Kolivas suggestions are to use NO Tickess, for all kernel flavours, apart the laptop one
With NO Tickess, we should waste a little more of energy (1-2%?) but having a more reactive OS

Reading about, many famous kernel, for example Quantal, Zen, ecc.
use NO Tickless (NO_HZ = "n") for their low latency kernel

I am a little confused about which soluttion to adopt for our new kernel flavours,
for that reason the next experimental 3.5.4 will be dual 0 / 1 to test by ourselves
  • kernel-3.5.4-69.0 > all flavours are NO Tickless
  • kernel-3.5.4-69.1 > all flavours are Tickless
So, we could test the differences between the behaviour of Tickless ON/OFF and take the best decsion for our purposes

Naturally who wish to help us with testing should install and try two different version per the same flavour (69.0, 69.1)

some examples,
  • kernel-nrj-workstation-3.5.4-69.0 (No Tickless)
  • kernel-nrj-workstation-3.5.4-69.1 (Tickless)
or
  • kernel-nrj-laptop-3.5.4-69.0 (No Tickless)
  • kernel-nrj-laptop-3.5.4-69.1 (Tickless)
or whatever else... but remember to install the both 0 and 1 releases concurrently

Then use some days, starting with version 0 and version 1, and report us the feedback

On all new flavours have been developed points named 1-5 (CK1/BFS/BFQ/TOI)
now added also OverlayFS and the feature to boot even from UEFI FAT devices
actually inserted / enabled the TuxOnIce feature active only in -laptop flavours

ImageImageImage
Temporary flavour names list
  • kernel-nrj-workstation = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
  • kernel-nrj-multimedia = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
this has a higher HZ frequency, so It should be more reactive for all multimedia apps
  • kernel-nrj-studio = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
this has the hightest HZ frequency possible, it's the one est tuned for Pro Studio Audio (DAW)
This is the one we are testing (oiram73) with Jackd, Ardour, Rosegarden
  • kernel-nrj-realtime > mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
we are experimenting some timers configs for realtime, it will be maintained only if works
  • kernel-nrj-laptop > mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
with laptop configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting
  • kernel-nrj-server > mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
to be used in a generic server environment (like LAMP) and other server apps
  • kernel-nrj-gameserver > mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
to be used in a game server PC for 3D FPS games, for example CounterStrike
Then we have all PAE flavours, and for now only one CPU oriented (new Intel) + PAE
  • kernel-nrj-workstation-pae
these have been optimized for all Intel cpus greater than Pentium4 (starting from Centrino upto I3/I5/I7)
  • kernel-nrj-workstation-core2
  • kernel-nrj-work-core2-pae

The new Linux Kernel 3.5.4 fixes several bugs and problems found in previous versions of these patches and other fixes are a dedicated to better support with AMD C-50 dual core processor used mainly for netbooks. Small improvements also for ALSA and support for the USB device (removed the problem of rustle of keyboards Logitech EasyCall signaled precisely from lffl). Fixed problem dell'EHCI controller that gave problems during the suspension ASUS computer.

With the proper cpu microcode enabled you can obtain a more reliability of you system, especially indespensable in server area, so when your cpu has a defect, kernel will found the best work-around to avoid slowdowns, or dangerous oops that could harm till to freeze your OS...
  • Notice for the users of MDV 2011!
Some problems could still occour in Mandriva 2011 by dracut remaining problems with installation and update
these problems if / when happen are not our fault, because aren't related to the kernel contents or packaging...
Once I succeeded to solve this ugly problem, installing the "dracut" version from RM2012 repositories into 2011

With the new incoming kernel 3.5.5,
I hope to have already the final setting configutions by the test results

If so, all the other kernel branches will be prepared in the same way:
I mean Kernels 3.4, 3.3, 3.2, 3.1, 3.0, in their latest recent versions...

all that for the experimental development tree called Yin/Yang (69)

potenzio ancora di più il realtime... alzandogli ancora il clock, poi lo confronti nuovamente con "studio"

Secondo me c'entra il no-tickless che ad una frequanza maggiore da risultati migliori! :D

Effettuato test con kernel realtime 69.0

Configurazione PC:

Amd A6 3650
mb asus f1a55m lx
ram 8 gb
Video ATI Radeon hd 5450
Lexicon Omega USB esterna

Applicazioni in uso :

To be honest.
I see no difference between the kernels on my Mandriva 2011 64bits:
3.5.4-nrj-desktop-1mib
3.5.4-nrj-workstation-69.0mib
3.5.4-nrj-workstation-69.1mib

Maybe because my hardware is a little old fashioned.
AMD X2 5200
8 Gig Ram
Geforce 8800 GTS
HD 320 Gig

I will continue testing these in the next days

What I know is that in ROSA Marathon both versions of multimedia 3.5.4 work. In ROSA devel aka ROSA 2012.1, both versions of MM won't boot. Selecting either in grub menu restarts machine. And most unfortunately in Mandriva Cooker there are no new kernel versions other than kernel-linus whose purpose is ill defined and latest version also won't boot but again restarts machine. Haven't tested in 2010.2 due to time considerations and also the fragility of Mandriva based distros at this point in time leave me with a strong desire to keep something that works very well.
Thanks,

The boot problem in 2012.1 is well known, infact was one of the reasons of 2012.1 Beta1 delaying:
There are many news in the core, new grub-efi, new bootsplash, new binutils, and something
caused the kernel won't boot, at the last was the new binutils so ROSA reverted to previous version
but
kernel 3.5.4 should be rebuilt, because those rpms were build with new problematic binutils so are
not working, and can't boot, I'll send to rebuild soon, a newer version (beta2)

Yesterday I worked all day long, in the night and I leaved the PC building a new creature...

Using as codename "nrjEvo", that is the new temp codename until we consider decided,
there are also many other fixes all around in configs, and some new interesting flavours

In this, it's like to be as a last beta, were everything has been full developed and functional:
but something could be still modified...
  • Dropped two desktop flavours > -multimedia and -studio, same perfs of workstation
  • Renamed -workstation to usual -desktop (now the codename makes the difference)
kernel-nrj-workstation now has been renamed kernel-nrjEvo-desktop
  • Added two flavours > -netbook (taken from mainline) and new -server-computing
  • Renamed -gameserver to -server-games (all server flavours begin with "-server-")
  • About new kernel-server-computing, directly from its rpms %description:
"for server use, to obtain a optimized dedicated encoding / compiling / computational machine"

I have to start some testing about new server-computing that should cut build times...
(i'll use "time rpmbuild ..." with 3 kernel builds, and I hope ho have shorter build times
if not, or the gains are not significative, this flavour could be really abbandoned...)
All the configs have been fine tuned following the mib test results and suggestion of MIB testers:
we must thank a lot to them... (mainly > oiram73, HighHopes, GvM, Rugyada, ...)

Re: Kernel 3.5.4 Evolution for MDV 2010 2011 & ROSA 2012 201

Post by NicCo »

Developments in progress...
ABF this night already completed the builds for x86_64 part, while i586 builds are still in progress

now we have
  • Kernel 3.5.4-69 Devel tree (temporary name nrjEvo, v. Beta2)

    RM2012 - 64bit
    http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... n/release/
    RM2012 - 32bit
    http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... n/release/

Now we cant update it to 3.5.5 version due to a problem with CK1 patches (waiting for an official fix...)

(i'll use "time rpmbuild ..." with 3 kernel builds, and I hope to have shorter build times,
if not, or the gains are not significative, this flavour could be really abbandoned...)
  • Kernel 3.5.5-1 Mainline tree (with many addons and improvments)

    RM2012 - 64bit
    http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... n/release/

    RM2012 - 32bit - BUILD IN PROGRESS...
    http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... n/release/
    • I imported from nrjEvo and adapted for mainline (without BFS/TOI)
    • kernel-nrj-laptop (is the only one flavour with the cpu profile in ONDEMAND and other optimizations for all the laptop PCs)
    • kernel-nrj-realtime (is the only flavour in mainline with BFQ available and enabled, NO Tickless, and a new NRJ module)

Some considerations:

BFQ is kind and it's easy to add, enabling and disabling is possible, so now we test BFQ in -realtime, in the future we could add and enable
also in other mainline kernel flavours

the new imported and adapted flavours have to been tested, only if they'll demonstrate to perform as expected will stay in the mainline tree
otherwise could be deleted, and not more supported...

All the configs have been fine tuned following the MIB test results and suggestions by the MIB testers:
we must thank them a lot (I received help mainly from > oiram73, HighHopes, GvM, Rugyada, others)
