Rosa 2012 X64.
I got the automatic update, but grub`s menu.lst was not updated nor initrd-3.5.3-nrj-desktop-1rosa.lts.img was generated, so after the update I'm still with version 3.5.1 of the kernel.
In my system the browse and configure hardware button in control center does not work with kernel 3.5.1.
Nicco I see that you're really busy, but can you fix it, together with the latest nvidia driver?

Thanks

About kernel 3.5.3 not avaialable in your boot,
you can try to remove it and install again

It's better you check if you really installed the right files or if you automatically installed only the metapackages
kernel-nrj-desktop-latest & kernel-nrj-desktop-devel-latest without the two real files called kernel-nrj-desktop-devel-3.5.3 kernel-nrj-desktop-3.5.3

If you have only the metapackages you need to install the real kernel rpms!

If you don't have the Kernel 35x repo as folder, you can add it now so

Code: Select all

urpmi Kernel-35x --update http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kernels_35x_personal/repository/rosa2012lts/x86_64/main/release/
Now you can remove the wrong installed kernel rpms

Code: Select all

urpme -a kernel-nrj-desktop-devel-3.5.3 kernel-nrj-desktop-3.5.3
Then you can install with the right command your preferred flavour

If the flavour is nrj-desktop

Code: Select all

urpmi kernel-nrj-desktop-devel-3.5.3 kernel-nrj-desktop-3.5.3
If the flavour is nrj-netbook

Code: Select all

urpmi kernel-nrj-netbook-devel-3.5.3 kernel-nrj-netbook-3.5.3

Thanks, Nicco, ,I'll try to manually install the kernel, but the rpms were already reported as installed by mcc and after the upgrade I got the message inviting me to reboot to activate the new kernel. Due to the fact that I always saw this message after the installation of the kernels, no matter if automatically or manually, I guess that at least the kernel rpm was installed.
Moreover the other files, vmlinuz, symver, etc were present in my /boot directory at 3.5.3 version.
In any case this afternoon I will try the manual installation and report you about the results.

Thanks again

The manual installation worked fine. There can be a problem with the metafiles or mcc?

Please read better the MAIN TOPIC, I didn't forget to inform about every item, infact I added also a little ALERT icon

I mean, and here I repeat into "quoted", this part!

In brief, Microcode is a special kernel firmware related to a better and reliable use of X86 CPUs (AMD & INTEL)

Starting from this kernel 3.5.3, we decided to put cpu firmware (microcode) as a Requires: for all kernel flavours

I believe there is still a remaining problem with dracut reliability
In certain moments, it could happens it forget to update some config files in the boot area,
in these cases, the best thing we can do, is removing installed kernel and install it again

this thing happened once also to me... and I thought I was the the only unfortunate... :D

Now you have kernel 3.5.3, can you tell me something about it?
Everything as usual, or you can suggest something to be noticed...

Kernel 3.5.3 has a very fast start-up and shut down times. I didn't test it on my laptop 'cause I'm waiting the availability of the latest Nvidia driver (I have a quadro mobile 4000 card on it), but I'm curious to see if it improves the intel WiFi driver, as the difference in performance with windows, despite the declared improvements in Kernel 3.2.x , is big, specially for the stability (I observe frequent drops in connection speed even if the strength of the signal is excellent, around -40 dbm).
At boot time the only service that fails is winbind, that, if I'm not wrong, prevents the name resolution in samba, but that's something I can live with. Hardware detection in mcc now works fine.
A problem I see, but in my opinion is not directly related to the Kernel itself, or at least not to your implementation, is with vmware 9. As used a patch is needed to make it work with kernel 3.5. If applied, vmware works fine, but it hungs during boot for a couple of minutes at the smat card services initialization that fails (I don't have a smart card reader on my desktop) and then starts correctly, signalling that both the winbind and the daemon for automatically switching to the best network connection fail to start.

Attached is the part of the boot log that shows such errors:

only a not official patch permits to vmware to work somehow

- Slow boot time after installing vmware is a known problem
http://forum.rosalab.ru/en/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1056
It seemed a fixed problem for vmware 8 , but really is still not
You can read about in the ROSA 2012 LTS errata wiki page
http://wiki.rosalab.ru/en/index.php/Err ... athon_2012
Very long boot time with VMWARE installed

In case your boot takes very long time you 8can try disabling pcscd service in your host system. It can be done via drakxservices, or by executing command

Code: Select all

systemctl disable pcscd.service
from root user
- Winbind problem is new, as i did not know anything about...

Update ^ to 08 September 2012
Go To the previous msg!

It's only to remind You that today we have available all the updated kernel versions from kernel 3.0 to 3.5
Precisely we are maintaining: 6 versions for 4 different distros: mdv2010, mdv2011, RM2012, ROSA 2012.1

We must thank a lot also to the clever and available ABF developers that make all that possible!

and after this,
I'll focus all my attention in completing the first public nrjX, first release will be version 3.5.3

Kernel nrjX(treme?), the Next Generation... a step forward
