darkc wrote:Hi I am Darkc, I already post a thread regarding kde 481, in mandriva forum but in French. Here is my post in English
Ok, I have successfully installed kde 4.8.1 64bits on top of my mandriva 2010.2. It works great (almost) but I have a really big annoying problem with twinview configuration.
Before upgrading to kde 481, I was running mandriva 2010.2 + kde 455 Mib backport ( thanks again). I have two monitors connected to a gforce 8800 running nvidia proprietary drivers. Under this configuration, twinview was working as expected, with one different desktop per monitor, and of course the possibility to move a window from one monitor to the other.
Now, under kde 481 by MIB, twinview behaves differently. I just have ONE desktop spread on the two monitors. It means that when I maximize a window, or I toggle an application in full screen mode, the window will cover the two screens instead of one screen, which I don't like, and I don't want.
So I was suspecting a driver issue (which should not be the case bc it was working great with kde 455). Then I updated to the latest nvidia driver, and I also tweaked as much as possible all the possibilities for /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, without success... same pb.
Then I updated xorg to xorg 1.11.3 MIB backport (thanks AGAIN !), and no luck, same problem....
Then I installed xcfe to check what happens with another windows manager. And with this WM I have a normal behaviour !! I have one desktop per monitor, and maximizing a window only cover one desktop(monitor) as expected !
I tested kde 481 with another linux distribution and it behaves correctly regarding twinview mode.
So the question is : did you compile kde 481 with some specifics options which involve such (bad) behaviour of the twinview mode ? Or do I miss something else ?
THANKS A LOT in advance for your help and all of your work.
KrandTray (in Tools-SystemTools menu) what does show to you?
I always used it to configure multiple displays...
but I'm on a Radeon HD5750, so thing could be different.

You can also tweak the video card output from a konsole using "xrandr" (it also has much more options than the kde GUI one)...

KrandTray gives this :
http://postimage.org/image/wstpt34k1/

In "size and orientation" there is only ONE output device instead of TWO.

And as you can see there is only two tabs, the third one (configure multimonitors) is not present.

Here is is the report of xrandr -q

ouzo:/home/jcl> xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 3840 x 1080, current 3840 x 1080, maximum 3840 x 1080
default connected 3840x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm
3840x1080 50.0*

BUT did you manage by yourself a correct twinview configuration with kde 481 by MIB ?

Thanks, DC

Hmm...
What do tell you dmesg and Xorg.0.log? Any error or warning?
It seems that the xserver does not recognize correctly the outputs of your video card;
the WM should not be so relevant in this field...

In my xorg.conf I have this lines about monitors

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "monitor0"
VendorName "Philips"
ModelName "Brilliance 220C"
Option "DPMS"
# TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output.
# 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync
ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630

EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "monitor1"
VendorName "Samsung"
ModelName " SyncMaster 2032BW"
Option "RightOf" "monitor0"
Option "DPMS"
# TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output.
# 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync

EndSection
I also manually identify the one connected to the DVI connector:

Code: Select all

Option "monitor-DVI-0" "monitor1"
and this WFM.

You could also try to install and use gdm in place of kwin, to verify that this is really the culprit...
xfce is a whole graphics ambient, alternative to KDE, so using it does not help us to isolate what eventually is wrong in you KDE installation...

Well, there are no relevant errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Anyway and as I mentioned in my previous post, it was working correctly with the same driver and kde 455. The only new part is kde build 481.

Also I tried all the possibilities of /etc/X11/xorg.conf configuration file with no success (monitor, device, metamode, etc...).

I re ask you the question again : did you test yourself twinview configuration mode with kde 481 MIB backport ?

There is no "twinview" thing with radeon free drivers, only xorg.conf & randr commands to have a splitted desktop between the two screens...
this actually WFM.

ok then, could you post which xrandr command do you use to activate twinview on two monitors with different desktop on kde 481 by MIB ?

thanks

some users reported a problem about "Nepomuk does not start for me"
and so...
from our developer feedback with Nepomuk / Strigi
with this usefull video It should be very clear how to activate and configure the whole thing...
That's how Nepomuk works for me:

I used LC_ALL=C but some minor texts are still in Russian. Anyway. it's
easy to understand what's going on.

Hi,

i installed gnome this morning, and it works as expected in twinview configuration :
=> an individual desktop for each monitors, and maximizing a window cover only one desktop (monitor).

So what is the status on my machine:

Twinview as a normal behavior with the following windows managers :

-xfce
-lxde
-gnome
-kde 4.5.5 MIb backport

and an abnormal behavior with:

-kde 4.8.1 Mib backport

I am desperate.... any clue ?

JC

i noticed you have checked "unify outputs" option in KrandrTray.
if you uncheck this option something happens?

Ciao, Luca.
Well it does not change anything.

I also tried from a new user in order to have a clean home (no .kde4, no .config, no .local etc...) and unfortunately, same problem :(

1) Installation Mandriva Free Edition 2010.2 + Update + reboot
2) Installation Kernel 3.1.6 from MIB + Nvidia 280.13 driver + reboot

At this time, I've tried these workaround

- Delete .kde4 ==> Same problem
